Traditional Uses
Traditionally considered to be a 'blood purifier' in Caribbean and Indigenous herbal medicine due to the belief that it could remove 'impurities' from the blood that were thought to be the cause of skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema; historically used for syphilis and other infections and as a tonic for fatigue and general weakness; also used for arthritis and joint pain

Today, it is used in herbal preparations marketed for skin health support, joint and inflammatory conditions and general wellness and detox; It extracts have studied for anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial properties.
Mechanism of Action
Methanol extracts from the root contain saponins and flavonoids, which may inhibit inflammatory signalling pathways; these compounds reduce the production of inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and prostaglandins thereby reducing immune cell activation, oxidative stress and tissue inflammation.
